The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has revealed the names of the first three Melbourne artists that will adorn the 2022 Architecture Commission with original painted murals.
The commission, Temple of Boom, designed by Melbourne architects Adam Newman and Kelvin Tsang, is a contemporary reimagining of the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens.
The scale model will be overlayed with artworks by a selection of Melbourne street artists including Drez, Manda Lane and David Lee Pereira. NGV director Tony Ellwood said overlaying the ancient structure with contemporary, locally generated art will imbue the structure with “new connections to time and place”.
Multidisciplinary artist Drez will create a “boldly colourful mural” for the installation that takes on a new character when viewed from different angels.
Muralist and illustrator Manda Lane explores the interactions between the natural world and the man-made. As such, her mural will incorporate the growth behaviours of plants, expressing a visual metaphor for growth and expression.
Finally, David Lee Pereira is a visual artist whose works explore fluidity of gender, sexuality and identity. Pereira’s contribution will include floral motifs that “draw attention to nature’s flamboyant use of scent and colour to allure pollinators.”
The trio’s works will be unveiled on 22 November when Temple of Boom is opened to the public.
The architecture commission will be painted in three stages, with second- and third-round artists adding their flourishes in early 2023.
Since 2016, the NGV has invited architects to create an annual site-specific installation in the Grollo Equiset Garden. The most recent commissions have included designs by Taylor Knights and James Carey (2021); Yhonnie Scarce and Edition Office (2019); and Muir and Openwork (2018).
