The Rockland Historic Preservation Commission and the Strand Theatre are sponsoring a monthly scavenger hunt of architectural details in Rockland to encourage residents to notice the wonderful architectural details that add so much to the historic flavor of Rockland.
The historic architecture and historic atmosphere of Rockland are economic assets that promote cultural heritage tourism. Rockland has samples of many important architectural styles: simple Capes — often double houses for the working class; Greek Revival – with pediments, pilasters, corner boards, and columns; Italianate — with towers, brackets under the eaves, and arched windows; Queen Anne — with towers, turrets, bay windows, carved decorations, and stained glass windows; Second Empire — with Mansard roofs and fancy dormers; Shingle Style — covered with shingles, gambrel roofs, round towers, or round porches; simple Bungalows — with broad roofs and porches across the front; and Neoclassical — a bank or school with the entrance in the center of the symmetrical, flat front and classical details such as columns, pilasters, and an elliptical entablature above the door.
Beginning in January, at the start of each month, the Commission will post a photo of an architectural detail and ask readers to identify the address where it can be found and send their answer to RocklandHistoric@gmail.com. One winner will be chosen from the correct responses and receive two passes to a movie at the Strand Theatre. Instructions on how to participate will be included in each post, but you can start to take notice of the buildings around you now!
