SHoP Architects is an acclaimed architecture firm striving for innovation in the design and delivery of ambitious projects around the world. We are seeking a talented Architect with experience in Residential Design to join our team. This position will support the design and execution of key design projects with a focus on the scope of Mixed Use & Residential Design projects. The position will be required to work closely with project teams to design, coordinate and document residential design. Candidates must exhibit a strength and interest in managing complex design variables while coordinating with clients, outside consultants, and other collaborators.
Skills + Experience/
Design
- Develop design studies, diagrams, and precedent research as part of a project team, while guiding and collaborating with junior staff.
- Demonstrate ability to problem solve.
- Demonstrate design experience and strength in multi-family residential typology including unit layouts and interior space planning for condominium and rental apartments. Experience in hospitality is a plus.
- Demonstrate the ability to think creatively to find innovative solutions to residential typologies.
- Possess practical knowledge of building materials, detailing, construction techniques and building and zoning codes.
Presentation / Communication
- Support the production of presentations internally. Discuss project ideas within your team, and in review settings with Principals.
- Develop and further curate the narrative of the project. Present design ideas to clients and other external project team members and contractor teams.
- Coordinate and prepare project correspondence.
Documentation
- Support the documentation of the project with minimal oversight in collaboration with project leadership and directors, while guiding the efforts of more junior staff.
- Take initiative in seeking guidance with office resources and advisors and/or peers when questions arise.
- Possess a strong understanding of critical code and accessibility requirements.
- Demonstrate a strong proficiency in Rhino and Revit for design and the production of architectural drawing sets.
- An added benefit would be to have experience with interior design and/or finishing including detailing and millwork design.
Coordination
- Incorporate input from the project team including the client, consultant teams and contractor into the design.
- Communicate and coordinate the project design directly with consultants and contractors. Guide the broader team towards solutions that align with the overall project design intent.
Team and Project Management
- Manage and complete tasks that have been delegated to you by your project team, and know when to ask and raise questions.
- Manage and supervise junior members of your project team. Delegate design and drawing tasks to junior members of your project team.
- Initiate design, research, and development related to assigned tasks that augment or advance the direction given by the Project Team.
- Demonstrate and ability to prioritize when given a list of simultaneous time sensitive tasks by both Team and Client, properly planning work that needs to be completed against project timelines.
Construction Administration
- Be able to complete and in some cases direct younger team members on what to look for when reviewing submittals and RFIs.
- Participate in consultant coordination both in the office and during site visits and meetings.
- Be able to leverage research with vendor materials and systems to solve project problems. Understand in the review and response to questions when code and zoning issues will need to be addressed.
- Be able to perform site visits and produce required field reports.
Critical thinking
- Be able to reflect and identify what was successful or not during a design process.
- Collaborate with team leaders on team activities and fulfill role as mentor to younger designers.
- Contribute to feelings of safety within their team and is a positive ambassador of SHoP.
Experience/
• 3 years minimum professional experience; 5 years, plus, preferred
• Completion of five-year architectural undergraduate professional degree or an architectural master’s degree.
