Inside the zany, space age-inspired Dreamscape Apartment by Red5studio

People’s own stories and daily vocations often reflect in the places they inhabit, through their choices of décor articulating their homes. Such is the case with the uncanny, cavernous, and colourful interiors of this residence in Ho Chi Minh City that reveal a playful, atypical, space age-inspired aesthetic punctuated with artsy furniture, quirky décor and other nonconforming oddities. Rightly named the Dreamscape Apartment, the dwelling designed by Vietnam-based Red5studio caters to artists, their occupations reflecting and inspiring the brightly hued 90 sqm space enclosed in a square plot, hosting unconventional, curving walls and surfaces inside.

“An interesting title would make an interesting design, we believe – a house that manifests as the dreams of a dreamer – dream on!,” says the Vietnamese design studio who configured the home to reflect the owners’ lifestyles, work, and social rhythm, as an embodiment of their artistic creativity.

The most distinguishing aspect of the refreshing and dreamy residential design are the surprises that await at almost every curving corner and undulant surface, in lieu of straight lines and sharp edges. A buffer area marks the walk-in entrance of the Dreamscape Apartment, as preparation for the wacky Dream Cave that lies inside. This is fitted with a curving doorway with no doors, leading into the other colour-infested sections of the home, such as the living room, the kitchen and the dining area.

The furniture here is modern and retro at the same time – chairs in stainless steel and acrylic painted forest green and tar black sit together with the clear resin dining table displaying a water-inspired look as light reflects on it, making friends with the colourful art pieces that either sit on the floor or adorn the walls, as bonus pops of whimsy.

Another, smaller cave painted a solid Persian blue is placed in the apartment’s centre opposite the expansive living room, as an intentional focus, a “fun” den that will “make noise” to entertain guests at parties and get-togethers (catering to the owner’s hobby of DJ-ing). Mostly white surfaces are contrasted playfully with accents of solid colour and unconventional furniture and art pieces, doused in colour and joyful shapes.

The working area hosts two chairs and a curving desk shielded from the living room with the attached balcony. “The myriad colours and disobedient shapes used in this apartment, from the furniture to the décor and art pieces, follow design languages of the ‘retro’, ‘retro future, and ‘space age’ aesthetics,” shares Red5studio.

The immense, tangerine-coloured sofa in the living room is inspired by a “space age” design aesthetic, colouring the interior design with joy and energy against the mostly white walls and surfaces that are unusual and playfully distorted. Bubbly, colourful rugs and tables front the sofa, while mismatched cushions sit comfortably on top. A petite corner hosts a checkered chair on an artsy rug, surrounded by art that sits next to the working area, fitted with a small window that reminds one of real life outside the zany apartment.

From the living room one walks into the bedroom that furthers the space age feel with an upholstered, soft-edged bed with zebra-printed bed covers and a sunny yellow bedside table with squiggly edges. A similar-looking lamp in white hangs on top of it while a creamy white dresser rests nearby. To add on to the wackiness of the Dreamscape Apartment, the connected bathroom is sans a door, only separated by curves and a glass wall.

Access to the balcony and all windows inside the home are taken over by curved borders, to leave no remnant of “common” straight lines and edges, mitigating their severity. The Dreamscape Apartment also lets natural light in, through opened corners and apertures choreographed inside the cave. At night, the cave changes the atmosphere with artificial, club-like lighting in neon pink, green and blue, taking a leaf out of the retro tones seen in movies from the 60s and 70s (also ala Stranger Things?), befriending melodies that the owner plays every night as well as their idiosyncratic collection of art.

Intentional and faintly non-sensical, the delightfully wonderful and eclectically styled interiors of the Dreamscape Apartment reflects the clients’ discerning taste and art-led lifestyle.

Home is where the heart is, and a creative vocation of an artist demands a domicile that lets one foster and gatekeep creativity, a haven of safety and inspiration and more importantly, a space that lets one effortlessly be themselves.
