New lifestyles and a growing awareness of the importance of eco-sustainability are weaning us more and more off our cars. An example of this is the Platform Innovation Centre & Parkade in Calgary, Canada, a mixed structure designed by the Kasian and 5468796 Architecture studios: it presents the idea of the reversible student residence-car park, not unlike the one created in 2020 by the Bruther studio outside Paris.
The Platform Innovation Centre & Parkade – part of a master plan for the development of areas around the centre of the Canadian city –offers 500 parking spaces, as well as charging stations for electric vehicles, places for bikes, a startup incubator and public sports grounds. Like its French counterpart, the height between the floors is deliberately greater than that required by law so that the floors now being used as car parks can be turned into homes or offices if parking space is no longer required at some point in the future.
