A schoolgirl died after a piece of iron-rod fell on her head from the roof of an under-construction school building at Tahirpur upazila in Sunamganj on Sunday morning.
The victim is Usha Moni, 8, a Class II student of Shripur Primary School and daughter of Anwar Hossain of Shripur village in Dakshin Shripur union under the upazila, police said.
Local union parishad member Dalim Ahmed said that a piece of iron rod suddenly fell on Usha Moni from the three-storey under-construction building of the school at around 9:00am when she was walking on the school premises, leaving her critically injured.
Shripur Government Primary School headmaster Mofazzal Hossain told reporters that the victim was taken to Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex.
But, the health complex’s on-duty medical officer Mirza Riad Hasan said that the victim had died before she reached the health complex.
Local residents alleged that the unwanted incident happened because of utter negligence of the contractor of the building construction work.
Tahirpur police station officer-in-charge Syed Iftekhar Hossain confirmed New Age of the death incident and said that the victim’s body was sent to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
‘Further legal step would be taken after receiving written complaint from the victim’s family in this connection,’ he said.
